HAMAT Transportation Co. is committed to instill a strong safety culture as a core value for protecting all its employees; assets; community and the environment the where its road transportation operations are conducted. The safety of its employees; contractors and customers is one of our core business functions and a fundamental responsibility of the company and must be thoroughly integrated into all areas of company operations. ​ The company believes that through a strong and visible leadership and engagement of its management will positively impact on the safety culture of its population and the success of its business. This is implemented through a structured Safety Management System (SMS) that outlines the strategy to achieve its safety goals based on ‘Safety First’ vision that accidents can be prevented.​ ​ To that end, the company will continuously be committed through the following:​ Executive Operations Management: Will lead the development of the company culture that promotes safe operations and provides appropriate resources to supporting this core management function through demonstration of good leadership; fostering and ensuring safe practices, and encouraging effective employee safety reporting and communication. Management is accountable for preventing workplace injuries and illnesses and shall consider all employee suggestions for achieving a safer, healthier workplace. Management shall regularly review the company’s safety and health program. Supervisors are responsible for supervising and training workers in safe work practices and must enforce company rules and ensure that employees follow safe practices during their work.​ Communication & Training: Employee engagement is crucial to a functioning of the SMS. Communication systems will be put in place to enable greater awareness of the Company safety objectives and safety performance targets as well as to provide ongoing safety communication up, down, and across the organization. All levels of management must proactively engage employees and work to keep the lines of safety communication honest and open. All employees will be made aware of the importance of the Company SMS and policies, and trained in the required safety modules. ​ Responsibility & Accountability: All levels of management will be responsible for delivering safe and quality services that represent HAMAT's performance of its SMS. Managers will take an active role in the Safety Risk Management process and ensure that Safety Assurance functions are supported. Managers are responsible for ensuring that Safety Risk Management is being performed in their operational areas to assure that the safety risk associated with safety hazards is assessed and mitigated ALARP.​ Employees & Contractors: Are expected to participate in safety program activities including, reporting hazards, unsafe work practices, and accidents to supervisors or a safety committee representative, wearing required personal protective equipment, and, participating in the safety committee activities​ Employee Reporting: Executive management will encourage all employees to voice their safety concerns to the line management. No action will be taken against any employee who communicates a safety condition unless such disclosure indicates the following: an illegal act, a serious misconduct or negligence, or a deliberate or wilful disregard of the Company rules, policies, and procedures. ​ Performance Monitoring & Measuring: Will establish realistic measures of safety performance and establish safety performance targets to ensure continual improvement in safety performance. Managers will verify that the safety risk mitigations put in place are appropriate and effective. Safety performance will be an important part of performance evaluations for HAMAT managers and employees’ performances. ​ Review & Evaluation: Will measure the SMS performance by analysing key safety performance indicators, reviewing inspections, investigations and corrective action reports, and auditing the processes that support the SMS. These activities will become the basis for revising or developing safety objectives, safety performance targets and plans with the goal of continuous safety improvement.
